The Complementary Roles of Course and Support in Student Development

  • Andrew Chesher
  • Philip Courtenay

Brief description of session and activities

This workshop explores the differing but complementary ways in which course-based teaching and academic support can support the development and acquisition of cultural capital. This will be our primary focus: the interface of course and support.

Our discussion will focus on the educational expectations and aspirations that characterise an arts or design undergraduate degree course, taking the Fine Art course at Chelsea as our example.

We will also explore the sociological background to the concept of ‘cultural capital’, so as to open a discussion of what its application to education contributes to our understanding of the field in which we work.
