Cultural capital, museums and collaboration

Brief description of session and activities

This session focuses on a museum project called Artefacts & Affects, a cross-course, cross-faculty, cross-institutional collaboration aimed at bringing artefacts out of the Southwark Art Collection archives, and delivering them to new audiences through innovative curatorial/spatial practices and interventions. The outputs of the project involving sound art, installations and interactive responses will be located in the LCC Gallery and containers from 12th until 20th January with a reciprocal exhibition in the lobby of the Cuming Museum. There will be an event including roundtable talks by guest speakers on 19th January and workshops on Saturday 14th January designed to engage with local community groups including families, school children and the elderly.

How will students be involved in the session?

Participants will be split into 5 groups, each will discuss one of the five fragments and associated discussion questions. Each small group will then report back to a plenary discussion.

What will participants take away from the session?

First hand experiences from students and staff on the challenges and pleasures of working on live collaborative projects.

Inspiration for engaging students in activities that expand their cultural capital and increase their understanding of cultural institutions.
