  • Julie Dennison: Associate Lecturer, Access Diploma in Fashion Business, LCF

Brief description of session and activities

15-20 minute slide presentation outlining a research project conducted in Nov 2011-Feb 2012 on formative assessment strategies and whether they benefit student learning and motivation.

The presentation will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of formative assessment. Q&A discussion of the benefits of formative assessments that lecturers have found in their own practice, plus an open discussion of the most effective forms of FA and how to overcome the challenges of formative assessment. The Q&A will also include the student perspective on formative assessment (see below).

How will students be involved in the session?

Liva Abola, who was a student on the Access Diploma course and who participated in the project, will be discussing formative assessment from the student perspective in the Q&A session.

What will participants take away from the session?

Hopefully an understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of FA on student learning and development, with some ideas they can introduce in their own practice.
