Running long distance races has a lot of parallels with the research process, and especially with the journey of undertaking a PhD. Consistency in training, grinding out the miles week after week, is a vital part of preparing to run an ultramarathon, without putting in the time the result will be disastrous. But running can also take you to places you never expected, and make connections between locations that bring new insights. This presentation will explore the lessons I've learned from discovering the joys (and pains) of ultra-long-distance running
