Narratives in Design – toolkit workshop

  • Silvia Grimaldi: Course Leader BA Spatial Design, LCC

This Workshop starts at 11:45 in room T1107. Back to Parallel Session 2

Brief description of session and activities

In this workshop participants will be using a card-based design toolkit that allows designers and researchers to analyse the way narrative is used within particular designs. This can be used as an analytical tool or as an aid to the design process, and both uses will be demonstrated. This project is a development from a paper that I delivered at DPPI13 – Designing Pleasurable Products and Interfaces 2013 in Newcastle in September. The paper was co-authored with Steven Fokkinga of Delft Technical University in The Netherlands and Ioana Ocnarescu of Bell Labs and STRATE College Paris, France.

The toolkit was developed with help from the Project Mode Staff Development fund and tested across a number of postgraduate design courses within UAL.

Will students be involved in the session? If so how?

no

What will participants take away from the session?

This is an example of the way in which teaching tools can be developed out of speculative research projects, and how then their use in teaching can help to assess and inform the research
